Kathua rape defense lawyer’s Sexist comments on the female Police officer
A new was low hit in the Kathua rape and murder case of an 8-year old girl after the defense lawyer of the case questioned the intelligence and mental capability of the woman police officer investigating the case.
The lawyer representing five of the eight accused in the Kathua rape and murder case – Ankur Sharma, had reportedly claimed that solving the case is “beyond” the intelligence of the female police officer.
The female police officer in question is Shwetambri Sharma of the Special Investigative Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch and she is the only woman officer of the team. The Jammu-based advocate Sharma also reportedly said that the woman officer had been “misguided by someone” because she was “a woman and a new officer”. The SIT is investigating the brutal rape and murder of the eight-year-old girl in a village in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The lawyer further alleged that the Jammu and Kashmir police had tortured witnesses to extract statements against the accused even as he questioned the manner in which the police was conducting the investigations into the case. He made these comments during a television interview.
Making the controversial statement, advocate Sharma said, “Shwetambri kya hai, ladki hai. Uska kitna hi dimaag hoga (What is Shwetambri, she is a girl, how intelligent can she be?) She is a new officer and by showing her a few circumstantial pieces of evidence, some people made her believe that the crime has been committed in this fashion.”
It was just a few days ago that Shwetambri Sharma had acknowledged facing a number of roadblocks in the investigation of the rape and murder of the girl belonging to a minority community in Jammu and Kashmir, while she was attempting to unearth the facts and truth about the gory incident. It was in that context that the advocate made those sexist comments.
But the allegations of the creation of roadblocks for the investigating team were dismissed by Ankur Sharma who further called the bureaucrats and police officers as being “mere puppets.”
“If she faced so many hurdles, why didn’t she inform her superiors about it?” he said.
He again made his claim of the botched-up investigation by the Crime Branch and claimed that the “witnesses had been tortured to extract favorable statements.”
He reportedly also said that the witnesses to the crime and those who were examined by the Crime Branch were constantly directed what to say and what not to say to the police after they had been tortured. He claimed that the crime branch had tortured about 40 to 50 people to extract favorable statements from them.
It is alleged that the eight-year-old child from a local nomadic Muslim tribe was kidnapped and kept seduced by injection of drugs for seven days during which she was repeatedly raped and tortured by some of the accused. She was supposedly kept a hostage in a local temple in Kathua before she was brutally murdered in January this year. The crime shot into the limelight after the filing of the charge sheet by the police earlier this month. Nationwide protests were held demanding punishment for the accused.
