Ex Karnataka DGP makes Offensive comments on Nirbhaya and her mother at an award function
Former top cop of Karnataka, ex- DGP HT Sangliana landed himself in trouble and controversy after he made some not-so-welcome comments about Nirbhaya – the girl who was raped and later died in Delhi, and her mother at an award function organized for honoring women and their work. The incident took place last Friday in Bangalore and came to light only recently.
Many took the comments by the former cop to be offensive are severely criticized them.
Offensive remarks by Senior Ex DGP Sangliana on Nirbhaya
Sangliana said on stage, “I see Nirbhaya’s mother, she has such a good physique. I can just imagine how beautiful Nirbhaya would have been.”
Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi attended the award function
The award function was also attended by Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s mother. The comments left a sour taste in the mouth of most of the attendees and many were left feeling disgusted and speechless.
In addition to commenting on Nirbhaya, Sangliana also reportedly provided some tips to women that many in the audience found equally appalling.
“If you are overpowered, you should surrender, and follow up the case later. That way we can be safe, save life, prevent being killed,” Sangliana said.
It cannot be said with surety that the parents of Nirbhaya had heard the obnoxious comments made by the top cop. However, the frustration that many of the rape victims and their families feel while fighting a long battle for justice was elaborately mentioned by Asha Devi.
“We have law, police, government but justice is something that does not come easy. Nobody now is scared of the law, the law is not a deterrent. We most times feel happy during these once a year celebrations, but that is only a token if it does not lead to change,” she said.

The government of India made changes in India’s Rape Laws
Protests led by common people erupted throughout the country which ultimately led the government to make changes in the rape laws and laws that deal with crime against women.
Among the accused in the case who was later arrested was one Ram Singh who was found dead in his cell – hanging from the ceiling at Delhi’s Tihar Jail in March 2013. One of the juvenile convicts was released in December 2015.
