According to reports and sources, Bollywood actor-producer Arbaaz Khan has accepted that he had placed bets on matches during the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year.

An amount of Rs. 2.7 crore was reportedly lost by Arbaaz last year in the betting according to police sources associated with the betting investigations who were quoted in the media. The younger brother of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, Arbaaz had been called in for investigations and questioning by the Mumbai anti-extortion cell investigating a betting racket.

“Apart from him, name of another producer has also cropped up, and very soon he will be called for questioning,” sources have reportedly told the media.

“My statement has been recorded. Police asked whatever they needed in this investigation and I answered them. I will continue to cooperate with them,” Arbaaz said following the recording his statement with the Thane police.

Arbaaz had been called for questioning on Saturday morning following issuance of a summon by the Mumbai police requesting him to come to the police station to get his statement recorded in connection with the alleged multi-crore betting racket that the police are investigating.

Arbaaz’s name cropped up after the arrest of bookie Sonu Jalan alias Sonu Batla a few days ago. It is being said that Jalan – who is reportedly close to Dawood Ibrahim and operated in India as well as abroad, had identified Arbaaz as one of the individuals for whom he had placed a bet. The accused claimed the Arbaaz owed him over Rs 2 crores in connection with the cricket betting.

“During investigation, it was found that Arbaaz was being threatened by Jalan,” Pradeep Sharma, senior police inspector with the anti-extortion cell said.

According to police sources, following the arrest of Jalan, the police manged to get hold of a diary that belonged to him which reportedly contained the names and phone numbers of over 100 other bookies who potentially worked with or under him or were those who had placed bets.

Police said that the diary also has the name of another Bollywood celebrity, several contractors and builders.

“Jalan had arranged a match-fixing meeting at Dubai. The celebrity was also present at that time. We are probing to know which match was fixed and who all were involved,” Sharma said.
