In a horrific incident that took place in Chennai, an 11 year old schoolgirl was brutally and repeatedly raped. Police have charged 18 men in the FIR related to the incident.
According to the police, the accused 18 men repeatedly raped the hearing-impaired girl in an apartment complex in the eastern part of Chennai.
In this horrific incident, there was involvement of security guards, electricians, plumbers and the lift man – all whom raped the minor repeatedly. A Chennai court has ordered police remand for the accused till July 31.
The girl was attacked after she returned from school and was going around the complex in a cycle. The complex itself has a gate for safety purposes. A 66 years old lift man was the first person to rape the minor.
He allegedly invited the other men, aged between 23 and 66 years, to rape the child, after giving her spiked soft drinks to sedate her. The accused reaped her repeatedly for almost seven months.
The accused persons took the girl to the building’s basement, terrace, gym and public rest rooms to commit the crime. While they raped the minor, they also allegedly took video of the crime while brandishing knives and then blackmailed her and threatened her of going public with the video if she said anything to the police.
A local police official said: “this is the initial stage of investigation and we have to go in-depth to ascertain the details.”
According to a report in the BBC, no lawyer wanted to appear from the behalf of the accused persons, said the president of the advocates’ association Mohana Krishnan at the Chennai High Court while talking to journalists.
The entire horrific story came out when the minor told all of the crime meted out to her to her family. following that, the family registered complaint against the accused. The girl is under medical treatment.
A local police officer said on condition of anonymity: “we arrested all the 18 accused for the heinous crime.” The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been slapped against the arrested.
Because of such horrific incidents are taking place with minors om a repeated manner, therefore the Indian government recently made the punishments for sexual violence against children more stringent. Under the new regulations, death penalty has been included as punishment for the guilty who rape girls younger than 12.
After the Kathua incident in which an eight year old girl was raped and killed, after being kidnapped, drugged and gang-raped while locked in a temple, there have bene multiple such incidents concerning minors in in last few months. To control the outrage of the nation, the government had come out with the more stringent punishments.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, every 20 minutes, a rape takes place in India. In 2016, almost 19,000 attacks on minors were reported but there are a large number of incidents which never brought to police station or gets registered.
